It&#8217;s the International Week of Happiness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During <a href=\"https:\/\/internationalweekofhappinessatwork.com\/\">International Week of Happiness at Work<\/a>, we\u2019re taking a closer look at what it means to be happy on the job \u2013 and offer some guidance from industry experts on how to find it.<\/p>\n<p>In 1993, 35% of employees surveyed by <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/1720\/work-work-place.aspx\">Gallup<\/a> said they were \u201ccompletely satisfied\u201d with their jobs which is the lowest level reported by the research organization. Fast forward 29 years to 2022 and that number reached 49% \u2013 with the highest level reaching 56% in 2020. Overall, the trendline shows we\u2019re more satisfied today with our work than in years past.<\/p>\n<p>The annual survey explores the full spectrum of satisfaction elements, including flexibility of schedules, chances for promotion, amount of money earned, healthcare and retirement plans, our co-workers and peers, and immediate manager satisfaction \u2013 nearly everything that makes up our work lives.<\/p>\n<p>But what if we narrowed it to just one? Brooks, a columnist for The Atlantic, host of the \u201cHow to Build a Happy Life\u201d podcast, and Professor of Management Practice at Harvard Business School.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat matters is not so much the \u2018what\u2019 of a job, but more the \u2018who\u2019 and the \u2018why: Job satisfaction comes from people, values, and a sense of accomplishment,\u201d says Brooks.<\/p>\n<p>Jesse Harrison, Marketing Manager in Asia-Pacific, at Eptura agrees. \u201cI&#8217;m happiest when I&#8217;m doing work that I believe has a meaningful purpose, aligns with my skillset, advances my personal growth, and surrounds me with inspiring, like-minded people,\u201d he explains in the comments of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:7102281128299958272\/\">our survey<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2476\" src=\"https:\/\/eptura.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/image-vision-bottom.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"559\" height=\"682\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eptura.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/image-vision-bottom.webp 559w, https:\/\/eptura.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/image-vision-bottom-246x300.webp 246w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 559px) 85vw, 559px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Social connection and collaboration makes people happy<\/h2>\n<p>Our <a href=\"https:\/\/lp.eptura.com\/content-eptura-workplace-index-Q2.html?_gl=1*jeyq7b*_ga*MTIxNzAyMDcwNC4xNjY0OTc5NDg1*_ga_ZWXVG3W4KC*MTY5NTc2NDI4NC40MjUuMS4xNjk1NzY0MzUzLjUyLjAuMA..\">quarterly Workplace Index<\/a> of today\u2019s trends finds social connection and collaboration with others to be a highly motivating factor for being in the office or other workplace location together. Our data also shows that more freedom of choice on the commute with flexible work schedules could make a difference in seeing people more days in the office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRelationships are fundamental to physical, cognitive and emotional health,\u201d writes Dr. Tracy Brower, a sociologist and frequently cited expert on the topic in the article \u201cTo Achieve Work-Life Happiness, Stop Trying to Be Happy\u201d in Newsweek.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrioritize creating, building and sustaining relationships,\u201d explains Brower. \u201cTo make a close friend, it takes about 200 hours of investment\u2014seeing them regularly at work, rolling up sleeves and innovating together, having coffee or taking a walk.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>How to be happy at work: What the experts say<\/h2>\n<p>In a sense, it really depends on how you define happiness. Can a goal as abstract and subjective as personal happiness actually be attained? Some research suggests setting the goal can be counterproductive to achieving it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s natural for people to want to be happy,\u201d writes Brower. \u201cBut ironically, if you make happiness the goal, you&#8217;ll actually feel more frustration and angst, based on research in the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/record\/2015-41047-001\"><i>Journal of Experimental Psychology<\/i><\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Happiness for its own sake has a host of challenges. It tends to be focused on what\u2019s missing and is overly focused on the self \u2013 whereas happiness is strongly correlated with helping others. The pressure to \u2018find happiness\u2019 can also be added to the list of stressors for those who are already trying to achieve a lot and are stretched for time.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, it\u2019s all about creating the conditions for happiness, finds Brower \u2013 who says they include these four elements:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Gratitude and generosity<\/li>\n<li>Purpose<\/li>\n<li>Social connection<\/li>\n<li>Learning<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Brooks says there are two important levers for creating these conditions for being happy at work: Earned success and service to others. Earned success comes from two levers. A sense of accomplishment and professional efficacy \u2013 or the idea that you are good at your job. High levels of all these elements help reinforce happiness and job satisfaction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmployers who give clear guidance and feedback, reward merit, and encourage their employees to develop new skills are the most likely to give you those feelings,\u201d says Brooks. \u201cLook for a boss who acts that way\u2014and if you have the opportunity,\u202f<i>be<\/i>\u202fthat kind of boss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Service to others isn\u2019t necessarily as altruistic as you might think\u2014though research does suggest volunteering and helping others in need helps satisfy people\u2019s sense of generosity and purpose. It relates to having thoughts that help an employee feel that their job is making the world a better place \u2013 and this comes from being able to find a service mindset in almost any role.<\/p>\n<p>How are you helping others? You can find that it in any job by stepping back and thinking about how what you do helps your customers and peers. We all have something we do that can help others.<\/p>\n<p>For <a href=\"https:\/\/eptura.com\/\">Eptura<\/a>, we give intention to serving others.
